I have sleep issues. I have had a sleep study done; I don't have restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea, I have chronic insomnia. So I have to deal with this question a lot! So my answer is obvious... drugs! No, not illegal drugs... my friend Lunesta. You've seen the commercials with the neon butterfly (by the way... I would freak out if I saw a neon butterfly fly into my bedroom at night! Just saying....)

I was off of all sleep meds for a few months and I would take a hot bath to relax myself before bed or I would read for a while. Then I got this pinched nerve in my neck and I'm back on Lunesta to help knock me out at night.
I used to take Ambien...
but that made me do really weird things. I would have phone conversations with friends and not remember it. I once drove up to Valdamort's house when we were dating and I don't remember it. One morning I got up and found a spoon and an empty sherbet carton in my sink, it was new... had just bought it the night before and I ate the whole thing while under the influence of Ambien. I've heard a story of a friend of a friend taking an ambien while online thinking it would take a while to kick in... then he woke up with some trick in his bed and not remembering anything about it! (And NO, it wasn't me) LOLHopefully I can get off all the sleep meds again!
What do y'all do when you can't sleep?

I'll make myself tired ;)
I second what Tai said. That's the best remedy. Free and FUN.
I'm awake on-and-off all night every night. I watch TV. My latest favorite is reruns of Medium.
I have Carlos bash me over the head with a cartoon frying pan.
Works like a charm, and then these little teeny birds fly around my pulsing noggin whistling a happy tune!
Masterbation before works wonders!!! I'm a pro!! Need a hand?

I get more and more frustrated. Then I really can't sleep.
I am like Y O Y. but no tv; I read shit on the computer, like blogs and newspapers.
before going to bed, I take a 3mg melatonin and read for a bit.
