In central Utah there is an area called The San Raphael Swell. My favorite area in the Swell is Black Dragon Canyon. It has gained in popularity in recent years but when I was growing up in Utah it was relatively unknown.
In June of 2004 I went back to Utah for a visit. One day I took my mom, oldest sister, her boys and younger sister's daughter to Black Dragon. The canyon is basically a crack in the dome rock, you can hike up the face of the dome with little effort and be on the top of 300 foot cliffs in a short hike.
There are some hieroglyphics and we had a great day hiking around the canyon. I took the niece and oldest nephew on a hike up to an area where some of the cliffs have dropped to the canyon floor and have made a small cave behind them. This was a picture of them looking out over the canyon.
I love the colors and hues of the rocks. The area where I was standing was beautiful, it's difficult to describe, but basically I was behind and almost under tons of solid rock just propped up against the canyon wall.
The picture below gives you another view of the canyon. It is my favorite place in Utah.
Wow! A two-for-one Story Behind the Picture day!

I love these pics! Greg and I came so close to spending a week in Utah in 2005 visiting all the canyons and rock formations there, but in the end we went to Hawaii instead :-)
you gotta wonder what carved the rocks into those shapes, what petrified stuff might be embedded there, how old those rocks are...
thanks, jim; always interesting pix from you!
Someday, despite everything, I want to see Utah.
