After last weeks neighborhood yard sale I still have this stack of old clothes sitting on the bed in my guest room/office (thank goodness I don't have any guests wanting to visit me now). It has made me realize that I have enough clothes. The extra stuff I sold was too small to wear anymore (really, I'll never be a size 30 waist again). I could still clean out the closet again, for things that fit but I haven't worn in years. I have enough clothes. I don't need to buy any more.
I also cleaned out some small stuff from around the house. I have enough 'stuff' for my home. I don't need to go buy anything else! Of course things will break and wear out and I'll need to replace things, but that's different than needing stuff for your home.
I also love my home! I have enough room for me and any friends that want to drop by. Last weekend I was talking with the hosts of a party I went to, and as we were sitting in their "formal living room" they commented that they usually only walk past this room, they never really use it! This seem like a waste of space to me. That's why I know that I have enough room for me. I don't need a bigger place with rooms that I wouldn't use.
We live in a society of feeling like we never have enough. Maybe it's the commercials on TV telling us that we need these new, latest and greatest things! We need the newest fashions and we always need things bigger and better!
Is maturity what tells us to stop buying more? As I get closer to the half century mark I have finally realized I have enough "stuff".
Or is this just contentment?

It is so easy to keep getting more and more stuff. I've been feeling the need to go through everything and thin out.

It's great that you feel enough.
things don't make a person happy; when you don't buy extraneous things, you get to spend the money on travel or (insert your fave hobby here).
this is one reason why I quit watching tv; besides the insulting fare, the commercials are "you MUST buy this or your life will be worthless!" in your face.

Greg and I hit this point a few years ago. I'm glad you've reached it too.
We stopped buying stuff cold turkey and ignored the endless barrage of advertisements. Now we need to get rid of the stuff we have. We'll be having a yard sale in the next few weeks. You can come supervise if you'd like.
I've written on this topic a few times myself. Enough!
How marvelous to be able to say "I am content". I don't need more.
I spend more time now trying to get rid of things.
Our old boat needs a new motor...the old one is kaput.
Does that make me shallow?
I want experiences, not more stuff.
Jim, I'm about to do a clothing purge. Even with our new walk in closet, there are just too many articles of clothing hanging around unused. They are in good shape, so hopefully someone can use them at Goodwill.
