I like how culture seemed to change dramatically in the 60s too, from the conservativeness of the 50s to the summer of free love at Woodstock in the late 60s.
I love the music and movie styles.

I love the art; from the innocent, the fun and funky and then the wild psychedelics of the late 60s.

I know this is why I love the TV show Mad Men. Does anyone else love all things 60s?

Jim,
I was born in 1941. I don't remember much about the Forties but I definitely remember the Fifties. That was my era. I also like the Sixties and the Seventies. Where I started to lose it was with the Eighties. After that I'm done. I guess I'm just An old fogey now.
Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I'm not so sure I buy into the romanticization of the 1960's. It was probably OK if you weren't a person of color and had enough money and if you were gay and could 'pass' (remember homosexuality was both criminal and a mental disorder in the 1960's).
It was also very confusing. Media was expanding and the broadcast and sharing of traumatic events - the Cuban Missle Crisis, the assasination of JFK, the assasination of RFK, the assasination of Martin Luther King Jr. The Vietnam War was brought into the living rooms of American citizens and the returning Veterans were treated shamefully by both the public and our government. Norms were changing -- 'the pill' lead to the sexual revolution, but sexual ethics were a work in progress (I guess they still are). Illicit drugs were becoming more popular despite the unknown or ill understood consequences.
Yes, it was a happy time for me personally, but then, I was 13 in 1969 and had the good fortune to have parents who cared for me and worked their darndest to shepherd me through. Everybody didn't have that.
Will, I think you missed the point Jim was trying to make. Its about the style of a decade.
Jim, I personally like the style of the 50s.
As Jim noted in his post, cultural change was part of it.
I can hardly wait for the new series "Pan Am" to air. I think the styles from the 60's are going to be the bomb!
First, a comment about the 'Style of the Sixties'. There wasn't just one. Pre-1964, the 'Sixties' were still the 'Fifties', so I'm afraid anyone in love with the 'Mad Men' style isn't actually in love with the 'Sixties'. The rest of the decade was first swinging London, Carnaby Street (stylish), and then Hippie/Woodstock (clownish). Thank God no one is trotting any of that embarrassing Hippie shit out for television shows.
Secondly, a comment about the 'Youthquake' of the Sixties. The assumption that a true 'social conscience' was afoot took a hit for me personally, living in Washington DC at the time and overhearing the teenage sister of a friend of mine say she had "gotten a DATE for the protest" planned for the next day. That added just a trace of cynicism to my attitude toward 'the movement' from that point on, I'm afraid.
Oh yes, I absolutely love that early 60s style, both in fashion and decor. The late 60s and early 70s were, as domanidave said, clownish. Frighteningly so. I'm going through a big mid century modern stage in my sense of decorating style right now. Have you seen the movie Far From Heaven? Good movie, and I really liked the scenes especially of the house.
