Obviously people still like the experience of going to the movies as the newest movies keep setting box office records.
Going to the theater is still a fun experience for many. Seeing a movie on a huge screen with surround sound is quite fun. But I know people who don't like going to a theater, they would rather wait until the movie comes out on DVD before they see it. It's because you can pause the movie for a bathroom or food break or you can rewind it and watch any scene again.
Plus the prices of popcorn and drinks at a theater are extremely outrageous. Dallas has a chain of theaters called Studio Movie Grill. They have large leather recliners instead of a row of seats and they have a menu! The menu includes alcohol! You have a little coaster light, like what restaurants give you to notify you when your table is ready. You press a button on it and it lights up, the wait staff comes and takes your order any time during the movie! The food is average, but I like the concept.
What do y'all like; the theater experience or DVD? Personally, I like going to a theater. If I like the movie again I'll buy it so that I can watch it again and again.

I rarely go to movie theatres because I'm a bit too restless to sit there for two hours and because of the cost. However, watching at home on the small screen is not the same experience at all, as I miss the audience response to funny / scary scenes.
I prefer to see a movie at the theatre, but I CAN'T FREAKING STAND THE BEHAVIOUR OF OTHER PEOPLE in the theatre.
Seriously. From cell phones ringing and beeping and texting, to idiots talking and misbehaving, kicking the back of my seat, and teenagers actually running the theatre and not giving a crap about any of the above when you complain.
That's why I wait until it comes out on Blu-Ray.
There is only one theater in our area I will go to. It's "The Commodore Theater" in downtown Portsmouth.
It is a traditional theater that has nautical/historical murals on the walls and was completely gutted (except for the balcony) so that it accomodates tables with castered tub chairs for dining on the main floor.
(see http://www.commodoretheatre.com/history.php for info)...
It still has a HUGE screen and is a THX certified theater... It's owners also get involved with the LGBT community and host several films during the LGBT Film Fest...
I love the theater experience, but if the movie is something I'm waffling about seeing, I'll usually wait for the DVD.
at home, if I watch movies at all.
at a theater, I get restless; I cannot sit still for very long. then you have the loud talkers, the bratty kids, the texters, the cellphone users, etc.
and to pay $12? no thanks.
the last movie I saw in a theater was "the king's speech".
we don't have a movie theater concept like yours up here. but it still wouldn't make me go.
Watching movement on the big screen gives me motion sickness, so I have to be picky. And I can't do hand held camera shots - heave ho!
We don't really go to theaters any longer Jim. We stopped once there weren't any privately owned theaters here and I don't like being in small spaces with lots of people. We wait for the films to come out on Netflix and rent them or stream them. Our TV room was built to be very comfortable and the TV is 47", so it is a good sized screen.
