Kitteh Stuff

For the last year or so there has been a stray or feral gray tabby kitteh hanging out around my home. My neighbor puts food out for him and he has began to be more comfortable when I am around.
The last month or so I've seen a new kitteh around. A little gray and white one. But I've also been hearing the "mewing" of what I think were kittens. Last week mama cat (gray & white one) brought the babies out! All six of them.

They are sooooo cute!

I bought dry cat food and have been putting out so they get used to me. Mama kitteh let me open my door and take some pictures of the babies. She only hissed at me a few times: which in kitteh was: "Do not touch my babies!"

mama giving me the stink eye

Since I am allergic to kittehs this is about as close as I can get to having a pet.

Alas... my neighbor copied me on an email he sent to the HOA board that mama and babies need to be caught and adopted out before cold weather settles in... and before we end up with 24 (or more) kittehs hanging around our door.

I think my favorite is the little white one.

Deep Thoughts & Stuff

This is a quote from a new book I'm reading and I really like it:

"The scholars and intellectuals I met... always seem to hold a grudge against the world. They could never quite reconcile themselves to the idea that our lives don't follow the dramatic arc that a good author gives to a great literary character. Only in accidents of pure perfection does the world actually become a stage. And that, they seemed to think, was a shame."

~Ian Caldwell & Dustin Thompson - The Rule of Four

That's profound!

I'm soooo glad it's Friday! It feels like it's been a long week.

Freedom of Speech

It's time to get back on my soapbox about something....

Last Thursday after Glee I kept the TV on to watch Fox news. Their lead story was about some high school in south Texas where the cheerleaders are making banners with bible scriptures for their football games. The school district had them stop but the parents are claiming this is an issue of "freedom of speech" not a separation of church and state. They got some judge to set a court date to hear arguments from both sides... so until the beginning of October this little Texas town gets to gloat and tout their belifs.

Fox News asked people to comment on their Facebook page about the story and then remarked later in the news show how things were really "blowing up" on the comments.

I added to that blow up.

I saw there were several issues: the uber christians were all "we need religion back in our schools - this is a christian nation" and many staing that this was not school sponsored and therefore the studets had the right of "free speech". I was opposing them on both points! To the point that many people were posting rude and condesending comments directed directly to me, by name! And of course... there are lot of people praying for me too! [I'm really trying not to roll my eyes] lol

Anyway... I really tried to be respectful in all of my comments and I actually had others defending me too! I even got some new friend requests from it from people supporting me and my views.

I won't go into all of my comments about religion. But the freedom of speech issues I want to make a comment here. Even with the 1st Amendment we still have limits, particularly when freedom of speech conflicts with other values or rights. Limitations to freedom of speech may follow the "harm principle" or the "offense principle", for example in the case of pornography, religious belief or hate speech. You can't go into a crowded theater and yell "fire!" and you shouldn't be making fun of or bullying people who believe or look differently than you. You shouldn't be rude and obnoxious either. Just because you can say something doesn't always mean you should. My father always said: "your rights end where my nose begins."

It's an interesting topic.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with this case in Kountze, TX. Probably it'll be dragged through the courts and appeals for years.

What do y'all think?

Poor Ann

In case you missed this quote in an article about Mitt:

Romney’s wife, Ann, was in attendance, and the candidate spoke of the concern he had for her when her plane had to make an emergency landing Friday en route to Santa Monica because of an electrical  malfunction.

“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”

OMG! She had to rub her eyes!

Wouldn't oxygen masks have dropped if the cabin filled with smoke? Oh.... but rolling a plane's window down,  just a little bit, will be sooooo much better.

Wal-Mart Game

I saw this on a friend's Facebook page and though it would make a fun blogpost:

Let's play "The Wal-Mart Game." It goes as follows:

You can only buy 3 items. What do you bring to the cashier to freak them out the most?

Ready? Set? Go!!

Celtic weekend adventures

This weekend was the 2nd Annual Celtic Music Festival at Sherwood Forest Faire near Austin.

I packed up the tent and camping gear, my kilt and bike and headed to Austin area to meet up with friends. I was supposed to have gotten there earlier in the day so that I could go bike on an off-road trail nearby with my buddy from Houston... but I slept in a little too late. My buddy and his wife had several adult beverages by the time I showed up late... so we only biked around the campgrounds and the fairegrounds. By the time I got my tent set up and air mattress blown up I was ready for some cider also.

Saturday morning we dressed in the kilts and headed into the festival. I had a great time catching up with friends and making new ones. I had a costume change from renaissance garb to more modern. We listening to several musical groups: from bagpipes to traditional celtic music. My friend's daughter and I learned how to do some folk dances and had a great time! But the weather was very warm! I was sweating... a lot! I had a nice buzz going... I was in a happy place! :)

This morning was spent taking the campsite down and driving back to Dallas. I now have everything cleaned and laundry started.

What a great weekend! All of my favorite things: camping, biking, dancing, listening to great music and being with friends.

Life is good!

Mormon prophecy?

Have y'all ever heard of the White Horse Prophecy? Read about it here.

If you don't want to read all the details here is a synopsis: Joesph Smith (founder od the mormons) said that "God told him" that one day the Consitution of the United States would "hang by a thread" and a mormon leader would come in to save the day and the country from ruin.

Hanging by a thread is an old Enslish phrase meaning that something is is ready to fall apart or end.

Really? Does anyone think that the country is falling apart and is in extreme danger of coming to an end? Do all these Rupublicians know that they'll be helping this mormon prohpecy? Do they really want to mormon's to think that they will come into power and will save the day? Really?

Of course Mitt is saying this is not widely believed... But my dad talked about it my whole life!

I think this is something to share with your conservative friends or coworkers or those on the fence...

What's been going on...

First of all: To all my Jewish friends... Have a great Rosh Hashanah! It's now the year 5773!

For all my Dallas friends: Happy Gay Pride weekend!

To my friends that came in from Corpus Christi for a visit so we could celebrate Liz' birthday: Have a safe drive home tonight.

To the pollen and allergens that have been plaguing me this week: enough already! It's time to go now.... I'm tired of you!

To the Gods: thanks for the rain this weekend. The gays didn't like it raining on their parade... but it was needed. And thanks for dropping the temps into the 60s too.

To me: I promise to get back into the workout routine and not let you get roundish and plump!

Hope y'all had a great weekend!

The tongue like a sharp knife... Kills without drawing blood.

People seem to forget this fact and great lesson of life during an election year in this country.

Words make a difference. I remember still to this day the taunting and teasing I endured while growing up. There has only been one friend from high school who bullied me that has apologized to me later in life. I think of this as I often go through my "friends" list on facebook. I recently deleted some a**holes cleaned up my friends list of people who wouldn't speak to me if I saw them in public or would never acknowledge me if they ran into me somewhere and some family members (cousins) that are just mean spirited in their political and religious beliefs.

I still don't understand why many organized religious groups do not see that their actions and words are bullying! Then they just seem two-faced when trying to stand up against bullying in schools.

Stop the bullying in your church too!

I often think of this in my own small quiet corner of the world. Do my words really have an impact on anyone else? Do my rants on this blog mean anything? Will my words ever come back to haunt me someday? Do I make a difference?

11 Years

It's not often that we can rememeber exactally what we were doing years ago... until a major event happens. Sometimes I can barely remember what I did last week.

I like that some groups and some people are making today one of giving back as well as a day of rememberance. I truely believe that the energy we give out in the world comes back to us and it's good to remember and learn from the past.

I have my opinions of how things have changed in the country since that day of infamy 11 years ago.

I thought I'd share my memories of the day.

It was a typical Tuesday... 2 weeks since I turned 40 and I was feeling good about life. Soon the news reports started coming in. One of my managers at work rolled a TV out into are working area so we could keep up on the unfolding events. No one could believe their eyes as we watched the South Tower and then the North Tower collapse, the plane hitting the Pentagon and all other flights cancelled. We started to wonder if Dallas would be a target since this was GW's home state as we heard that buildings all over the country were being evacuated. It wasn't until late in the day before all  flights were cleared and we were assured that no more attacks would happen. Of course the news reports dominated our lives for weeks afterwards.

Where were you?

Weekend Adventures

Dallas finally got a break from the heat! Woohoo!

I had bought a Groupon to go see the Chihuly exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum and this was the perfect day. I love the arboretum anyway. Even the loud annoying children and their unresponsive parents didn't bother me... too much.

Here are some pictures I took:
(BTW: these are all glass sculptures - see Dale Chihuly's site here)

Hope y'all had a great weekend!

TMI Thursday - Movies Edition

I'll take Sean up on his TMI Thursday quiz:

1. Do you still go to the movies? Why or Why not. Yes. I still like the theater experience. especially at a Studio Movie Grill where you can order real food and adult beverages! But it has to be a really good movie... I hate to waste money on stupid movies.

2. Would you go by yourself? Yes, I often do go by myself. That is not a big issue for me.

3. What was the last movie you saw? Recent recommendation? The last one I saw was Moonrise Kingdom. I would recommend people to see that... if you like a quirky movie. I saw Snow White and the Huntsman and I liked it and recommend it... even though I know a lot of people don't like Kristen Stewart.

4. Snacks: Buy, Bring or Boycott? Maybe I'll buy some popcorn and a bottle of water but only if I'm starving. I think the prices theaters charge is outrageous.

5. Teenagers used to go to the movies to make out. Have you ever and if so, when was the last time? I've never "made out" in a movie theater, even as a teenager! I went there to watch a movie. And those seats are too uncomfortable to get... comfortable.

6. Have you ever gone to an adult movie theater? Did you pull a Pee Wee Herman? I went to an adult theater a long, long, long time ago but don't recall doing anything except watching. I certainly wasn't arrested for indecent exposure!

Which all-time favorite movie would you pay to see on the big screen again? Of course cell phones, babies, and assholes are banned. I would love to see Sordid Lives on the big screen again. I would also have liked to have gone to a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show with all the audience participation. I never got to experience that...

Religious books

Oh no! I've got another über christian coworker!

Just when I got the other one to back the fuck up calm down...

She is having a difficult time wrapping her mind around the fact that a Pagan is claiming to be spiritual. She also questions my "ordination" that allows me to officiate at a marriage. She really can't see that "marriage" is really only a government contract, because if someone is married by a priest but it isn't registered by the state it isn't in force... but I digress.

It really makes me wonder why prople are like this... It makes no sense to me. A part of me wants to get in the über christian's face and go all "Chris Brown on Rihanna" on them... the other part of my brain stops me and makes me take the high road. My actions should show someone that I'm a good decent person, I shouldn't have to shout it at them.

Anyhoo... I found some old books that I don't want anymore and I offered them to her. These are 2 books in a series by Orson Scott Card called: The Women of Genesis. Historical fiction of Sarah, wife of Abraham and Rebekah the wife of some other Old Testament guy. Well... only historical fiction only if one believes that the christian bible is actually fact and not a work of fiction... but I digress.

She thanked me. Then offered me a religious pamphlet. WTF??

I fought that urge to go all "Ike on Tina" on her... But I politely explained that even though I read the bible from cover to cover, at least twice, I am not a christian!

I don't think this will ever end...

September Tarot

The Four of Swords
Gateway to the Divine deck

September will be a time of peace, rest and meditation. In this deck the artist puts the resting man floating over the swords instead of having 3 of them hanging over him. It's as if he is in a dream state.

I was with other close friends last night and had a great time. I also had lunch with another close friend. I think I'm going to spend this month just relaxing and enjoying the great friends I have in my life.

Sometime we don't do this enough....
